Soooo, Where Was I…?

More accurately, where AM I these days you might be wondering.

Since my last post I’ve switched over to my new digs over at the agency Medical Center. Working every day with at least 5 nurses, 3 nurse’s aides and a physician twice a week can be really exciting. Getting to interact with the children we serve is even more endorphin-inducing than I ever imagined.

These kids may be “at risk”, all sorts of broken and in need of assistance (and medication – sheesh!) but it is amazing when they just come at you like “regular” kids. Like, one of the purportedly worst residents on campus is all of twelve years old and so far has not ceased to make me smile every time he comes in. Of course, it’s a little depressing and at times annoying to see some of them so often; like do you really need a wheelchair because you had a foot-cramp, dude? – but this little guy blows me away.

For example – he came in the day after we got 2 new admissions. One of the new kids had a bad night & refused to get up and go to school after spending the night in our mini-hospital as is procedure. This established resident, let’s call him “Knee”, asked me whether the newbie seemed like a nice kid. Since I had only seen him during the time he came to be admitted, and was with his family at the time, I was honest about what I thought – he seemed nice but time would tell what he would be like after his family left. Knee said that his teacher told him that New Kid seemed cool & all that yesterday, but that he wasn’t so nice today and would be kind of a challenge.

I was kind of surprised that a teacher would say those things; giving already anxious troubled children something else to stress over. I told Knee that since New Kid was very new that maybe he’s scared and sad to be with us without his family. New Kid would probably be a little lonely on top of all that newbie stuff but maybe he’d come around in a little while.

Knee then went up to our Charge Nurse and asked if he could go to New Kid’s room to say “hello”. It was very touching to see him appoint himself The Welcome Squad and at least make an effort to give New Kid a familiar friendly face to help him feel more at home and like he could make a friend here; even if he didn’t enjoy being with us just yet.

So this is my work life right now. I get to work with amazing people and witness the charming quirks of our residents and staff. I’ve seen a few on-the-job accidents and witnessed our kids being all kinds of things in their struggles to get better under the care of this fantastic agency that allows me the pleasure of discovering my passion anew.

The only thing I wonder about lately is if there’s a point to this blog anymore. I mean, there will always be something to write about… I just don’t know when or if it will contain all the hilarious snark that I promised when this blog was started back in February 2014…

They taunt me every day...

They taunt me every day…

It’s not that there aren’t any annoyances to fuel my snark and sometimes rage – it’s just that my role in the Medical Center serves a higher purp… Aw, who the fuck am I kidding?? Pretty sure that being an appointment scheduler for a group of special needs kids with a long list of complaints and medical conditions, along with my skimpy list of resources that includes one company car shared between all of 2 limited-availability drivers will be fuel enough for future snarky posts.

It’s just that it still feels like the honeymoon phase right now so you’ll have to bear with me until I become funny again. 😉

Just your normal, everyday 9-5er. An uninspiring position in an inspirational non-profit moves me to constant goof-offery; aimless, on-the-job procrastination; a crankiness that borders on psychosis; and attempting to craft something meaningful with words. Just another so-called-job inspiring someone to feats of insanity with a hint of creativity... (Insert demonic laugh HERE.) View all posts by LVital7019

So. Did you pay $19.95 to “Tara, the on-line psychic” and all the evil surrounding you went poof? If only. It’s nice to see you happy in your work – hope it lasts. Hey, if you need snark, there’s ALWAYS life away from work!

So happy for you, Lorien! Your new digs sound like the perfect fit for you. Glad you can use your talents of love, humor, and empathy for a higher purpose now. Man, those kids (and also the doctors and nurses) are so lucky to have a beautiful (in and out) young woman like you. Don’t worry about shortchanging us on snarkiness. Your new blogpost might not be so nasty, but it is definitely inspiring! It’s okay to change your tune. You can still be a pied piper for your followers (as for me, personally, I like the tune you’re playing now far better than the sorry-for-yourself tune you played before (just kidding…I like a little snarkiness, too). I don’t have a doubt in the world that you’ll find your opportunities!
